Best Practice #6 "Come and See Evangelism"
Today’s post highlights the sixth of ten best practices of “Come and See Evangelism” found in the Gospel of John, chapter 1.
Best Practice #6 — Emphasize Discovery and Fulfillment
“He first found his own brother Simon and said to him, ‘We have found the Messiah’ (which means Christ).” John 1:41
“Philip found Nathanael and said to him, ‘We have found him of whom Moses in the Law and also the prophets wrote, Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph.’” John 1:45
Lost people might wonder whether they will go to heaven some day when they die. But in the meantime, they also wonder:
Is there really any purpose for my life?
Is there really any grand plan for the things that happen in this world?
Why do so many bad things happen to me?
What can be done about my pain?
What can be done about the heart-breaking loss I have experienced?
What can be done about all the needs I have? How am I ever going to get ahead?
What can be done about the evil that is at work in the world?
What can be done about the evil that exists in my own heart?
How can I get a fresh start in life?
How can I have a better marriage?
What can I do about kids?
How can I put my marriage or family back together?
Where can I find true meaning and peace?
I realize there’s something lacking in my attempts to find meaning and peace in drugs, alcohol, sex, technology, sports, work, materialism, and consumerism.
The Gospel Story-arc method emphasizes that Jesus came not only to forgive, but also to give life to the full here and now (John 10:10), to show people how to understand what God is doing in the world.
This doesn’t mean telling people that all of their problems go away when they become believers. No, no, a thousand times no. In some cases, that’s when the problems begin! I’ve known three people who were stricken with cancer and died within months of their becoming believers. We don’t shut our eyes to the heavy burdens of a fallen, sin-cursed world. We emphasize instead that answers to life’s problems are found in Christ, and that through faith in him life in this realm can be a fulfilling journey of discovery, leading to the resources we need to endure and even thrive.
Jesus himself often taught on the blessings of living under his rule here and now, of overcoming the world and the tribulations it brings. Evangelism best practices dictate that we share our own sense of personal discovery of these blessings, and of the fulfillment they bring to our lives.
